![]() 7th and 8th symphony have especially gorgeus adagios. However, he was perhaps better with slow movements than Mahler (not that Mahler's ones were bad). ![]() I'm particularly thinking about the scherzo of the seventh. The way they are repeated over and over again and heard clearly over the orchestra gives the impression of him saying "Look here, what a brilliant theme I came up with! This is the POINT of this movement!" which contradicts with the simple and uninteresting nature of these themes. His worst tendency is his often annoying themes. Bruckner on the other hand is bombastic in a calm, confident way. There's often many swirling melodies going on at he same time. Mahler is more nervous and hysteric, moving from an extreme emotion to its polar opposite. However, they are bombastic in different ways. This is undersandable since they both wrote bombastic, unusually lengthy symphonies. ![]() ![]() I usually like Mahler much more, to which Bruckner is often compared to. I wouldn't list Bruckner along with my favorite composers but I do enjoy his music.
